Before embarking on his dental career, Dr. Nick Rauber founded Swollfest Fishing Rodeo at 17 years old. Each year, this fishing tournament raises funding for the American Diabetes Association and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, bringing in 500 to 600 participants to fish for the biggest catch off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana. For those angling for saltwater fish, it’s good to keep the following tips in mind:
- Sometimes, participants may want to release a fish from the line if the catch is too small or is not the correct species. To prevent injury to fish that are released, try using a circle hook, or a J-hook with the barb taken off. Additionally, do not keep a keep a fish out of water for longer than you are capable of holding your breath. - For the best chance at attracting a fish, use new lures that shine brightly. Research the type of fish you want to catch to find out which colors and shapes it finds most attractive. Depending on the species, it may be in a participant’s best interest to use live bait instead of a lure. - Fishing equipment can be damaged by saltwater. To care for reels after saltwater fishing, soak them in a bucket of freshwater for several hours before drying and storing them. Additionally, be sure to lubricate reels periodically to prevent the need for expensive repairs.

The Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) recently presented the New Dentist Award to Nicholas “Nick” Rauber, DDS. This accolade is given to philanthropic dental professionals who have been practicing for less than a decade. Dr. Nick Rauber earned this award for his nonprofit work with such programs as the LA Mission of Mercy and the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic.
The LDA esteems civic involvement and public service work, and it encourages such efforts in its promotion of the National Children’s Dental Health Month in February each year. During this month, the nonprofit program Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) provides a day of access to pro bono dental screenings, services, and education to children without access to regular dental care. In pursuit of its philanthropic mission, the Louisiana Dental Association also sponsors the LDA Foundation, which offers grant opportunities to people and foundations that provide clinical research, education, and access to care programs that better the state of oral health care in Louisiana. |
